The work ‘Dancing Stones’ from Gerard Kuijpers is the result of extensive purification. The steel and stone reach their ultimate essences. The steel being as strong as never before; the stone radiates its heaviness. This piece of art shows how the stone, even in complete rest, never loses the potential of movement.
Technical the Dancing Stone should be regarded as Kinetic Art. While turning the stone the spectator feels the heaviness and lightness at the same time. Even a gentle breeze will be able to move the stone.
"In the early days of my career I decided not to call myself a sculptor but rather a furniture designer and maker because I regarded touching and manipulating a functional object higher than merely looking at a piece of art.
But after 30 years doing so I finally created a piece of art for which it is essential to touch and to manipulate it.
While touching the Dancing Stone one receives an answer from the stone directly. One can communicate in the proper sense of the word. Your whole personality, hopes, dreams and your deepest intention is involved but also the stone reacts with its full capacity and uniqueness. Whether with a polished surface or with rough edges created by nature during millions of years the stone is 100 % present.
And so should be the spectator: standing strong on his or her feet and expressing a pure and sober intention while addressing the stone.
The magic reveals itself when you feel the weight and the weightlessness at exact the same time.
In this age of digital and artificial living feeling and touching heavy and universal matter like these Dancing Stones can make you as a human more whole and one with the universe"
